FROM THE LAND OF SILENCE

Two young brothers live in the Iranian desert, surviving on whatever the area provides: one keeps camels used to smuggle goods and kept docile with opium, which has tied him to the traders; the other siphons diesel from lorries at night and sells it back to the drivers. Saman Salur tells, in “From the Land of Silence” (Iran 2004), a single day in the lives of the two brothers – the encounters with drivers, traders and neighbours in which it becomes clear that this life cannot continue as it is.

The film is Salur’s directorial debut. It dispenses with explanation, describing a region on the margins of attention where survival has become routine. “From the Land of Silence” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2007.
