Scene from The Night of the Sunflowers

Synopsis

The cavers Esteban and Pedro travel to the mountains of Ávila to explore a newly discovered cave; Esteban’s girlfriend Gabi goes with them. When the men return to the surface, they find Gabi in shock: a stranger has tried to rape her. On the road they encounter a man on foot, Gabi grows nervous, and without a word of explanation, shots are fired. At Cecilio’s house they find the dead man – and realise they have killed the wrong person. The Guardia Civil officer Tomás offers a deal: Cecilio lived alone, without family; for 90,000 euros, the matter can disappear. Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo tells, in “The Night of the Sunflowers” (Spain 2006, original title “La noche de los girasoles”), a rural drama in which a single night redirects several lives.

The film is Sánchez-Cabezudo’s directorial debut, which he also wrote; he tells events in chapters from shifting perspectives, so that the picture only gradually comes together. “The Night of the Sunflowers” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2007.
