Synopsis
A pandemic is spreading that wipes out memory without warning. Aris (Aris Servetalis), a middle-aged man, is picked up on a city bus – without papers, without memory, and no one comes to collect him. A clinic programme is meant to give the unclaimed a new identity: cassette tapes set him daily tasks – ride a bicycle, go to the cinema, cause a car accident – and he records every completed task with an instant camera. During one of these exercises he meets Anna, who is going through the same programme. In his debut “Apples” (Greece 2020), Christos Nikou tells of a man assembling a life from instructions – while ceaselessly eating apples.
The world of the film is entirely analogue, no screens, no telephones, only cassettes and Polaroids. The tone stays dry, the comedy laconic, the absurdity incidental. “Apples” opened the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival in 2020 and went on to screen in Toronto. The film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2020.
