NO.7 CHERRY LANE

Hong Kong, 1967. Ziming, a literature student, gives English lessons to Meiling, the daughter of Mrs Yu, who went into exile from Taiwan. Protests against the British colonial administration fill the streets, European films play in the cinemas, and Ziming is caught between mother and daughter: the elder draws him in, the younger is intended for him. In “No.7 Cherry Lane” (Hong Kong 2019), his first animated feature, Yonfan tells a triangular story set in a city in upheaval.

The film was conceived three-dimensionally and then hand-drawn in two dimensions; it is a love letter to the Hong Kong of the sixties and to the cinema of that era, with a long dream sequence, eroticism and a touch of hip-hop. “No.7 Cherry Lane” premiered in 2019 in competition at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the award for best screenplay. The film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2020.
