GOLD FOR DOGS
Synopsis
Esther (Tallulah Cassavetti) has just turned eighteen, has left school behind and has barely any family left. In the south of France she gets by on casual jobs; one summer she falls in love with Jean and does everything to please him. When he leaves, she follows him to Paris, a city where she knows no one. What she finds there is not what she was looking for – and eventually shelter with nuns in a convent, where she encounters a different kind of devotion. In “Gold for Dogs” (France 2020, original title “De l’or pour les chiens”), Anna Cazenave Cambet tells of a young woman coming of age who wants to be loved, and first learns this in the hardest way.
The film is built in two movements: summer, body, desire – then enclosure, silence, ritual. Cazenave Cambet’s first feature film was selected for the Semaine de la Critique at Cannes 2020. “Gold for Dogs” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2020.
