QUO VADIS AIDA?

Srebrenica, July 1995. Aida (Jasna Đuričić), a teacher, works as an interpreter for the Dutch UN soldiers tasked with securing the safe area. When the Bosnian Serb army under Ratko Mladić takes the town, thousands press towards the UN base at the gates. Aida interprets at the negotiations between the peacekeepers and the besiegers while trying at the same time to get her husband and her two sons onto the compound and onto the UN’s lists. She hears everything and can prevent nothing. In “Quo Vadis, Aida?” (Bosnia and Herzegovina 2020), Jasmila Žbanić tells of the days before the massacre from the perspective of a woman caught between the languages.

The film keeps to the course of a few days and does not put the violence on display; the horror lies in the hesitation of the institutions. It premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival 2020, followed by the Audience Award in Rotterdam, an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature Film and BAFTA nominations for direction and film. “Quo Vadis, Aida?” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2020.
