WEST OF PLUTO
Synopsis
Twenty-four hours in the lives of twelve teenagers in a suburb of Québec. Pierre-Olivier cannot get over the fact that Pluto is no longer supposed to be a planet. Jérôme wants to finally tell a girl what he feels for her. Nicolas and Steve are looking for a name for their punk band. Émilie throws a party at her parents’ house, and the evening takes its course: infatuation, flirting, drugs, alcohol and nocturnal adventures that no one planned. “West of Pluto” (À l’ouest de Pluton, Canada 2008) by Henry Bernadet and Myriam Verreault paints a portrait of a generation caught between boredom and departure.
The film feels so true to life that some took it for a documentary. The two directors found their fifteen- and sixteen-year-old cast at their own former school and improvised with them for months before shooting began – until everyone knew each other and their characters. “West of Pluto” was shown in 2009 at, among others, the International Film Festival Rotterdam. That same year, the film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin.
