VILLALOBOS

Ricardo Villalobos, born in Chile, is a DJ and electronic music producer and one of the defining figures of the Berlin club scene. Romuald Karmakar follows him in “Villalobos” (Germany 2009) into the studio, into the club and behind the turntables. He observes how Villalobos works and how he responds to the audience – how feedback from the dance floor changes his selection in unexpected ways. And he lets him talk: about his background, about his understanding of music and work, about the moment when a set comes together. A portrait that gives as much space to a musician’s thinking as to his music.

“Villalobos” concludes a loose trilogy about electronic music and club culture in the first decade of the new century, which Karmakar had begun with “196 bpm” and “Between the Devil and the Wide Blue Sea”. It had its world premiere on 8 September 2009 at the 66th Venice Film Festival. The Berlin premiere took place on 3 December 2009 at Around the World in 14 Films, in the Deutschland Spezial section; Karmakar and Villalobos presented the film in person.
