EVERYBODY DIES BUT ME
Synopsis
Katja, Schanna and Vika are fourteen and live in a Moscow suburb. When they learn that a school disco is taking place the following weekend, preparations begin for the big event – and in the process, the three girls’ previously unshakeable friendship is put to the test. Conflicts break out, hidden insecurities come to the surface, and their complicated relationships with their parents become apparent. “Everybody Dies but Me” (Russia 2008) by Valeria Gai Germanika confronts the girls’ naive notions with a reality far removed from their dreams.
It is the director’s feature debut, and it tells the story of growing up in a raw, unvarnished way. The film premiered in 2008 in the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes; it subsequently screened at, among others, Karlovy Vary and Rotterdam. “Everybody Dies but Me” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2009.
