Scene from Àma Gloria

Synopsis

Cléo is six years old, wears glasses and has lost her mother to cancer. What she has left, besides her father, is Gloria: the nanny from Cape Verde who raised her and whom she loves above all else. Then Gloria has to return to her home island of Santiago, to her own children, who grew up without her. Cléo is allowed to visit her over the summer – a last summer together, in which the child must grasp that Gloria has a life of her own, in which she is only a guest. “Àma Gloria” by Marie Amachoukeli is a French film from 2023, told entirely from a child’s eye level.

The Frenchwoman Marie Amachoukeli tells, in 84 minutes, in French and Cape Verdean Creole, of a bond that is no blood relation and yet a family. The camera stays close to Louise Mauroy-Panzani, whose Cléo carries almost every shot, while Ilça Moreno Zego holds the calm as Gloria. The film opened the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes in 2023. “Àma Gloria” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin the same year.
