Scene from Die Missetäter

Synopsis

Morán has worked at a bank for years. He has done the maths: 650,000 dollars is exactly double what he would earn before retirement. So he takes the money, takes his colleague Román out to eat and lays out the plan: Morán will turn himself in to the police and serve his sentence, while Román hides the loot in the meantime, to be split afterwards. Román, a dutiful employee, suddenly has a bag full of money and a bank investigator on his tail. Later he meets a woman who steers his life in another direction. “Die Missetäter” by Rodrigo Moreno, an Argentine film from 2023, is a heist film in which the robbery is only the beginning.

The Argentine director Rodrigo Moreno splits his 190 minutes into two movements: the first belongs to the crime, the second, calmer one belongs to Román and the question of what freedom costs once you can no longer measure it in working years. The film took five years to make, with a pause when the money ran out; co-produced with Brazil, Chile and Luxembourg. It premiered in 2023 in Un Certain Regard in Cannes; Argentina submitted the film for the Oscars. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2023.
