EUREKA
Synopsis
Three times, three places, a bird that connects them. In 1870, in a lawless town on the border between the USA and Mexico, Murphy (Viggo Mortensen) searches for his abducted daughter and encounters El Coronel (Chiara Mastroianni). Then the present: on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, a police officer gives up her post, and her niece Sadie sets off on a journey through space and time, to South America. Finally, the Brazilian jungle of the 1970s. A jabiru stork flies through all three parts, across the continent and through the centuries. “Eureka” by Lisandro Alonso, an Argentine film from 2023, asks what connects the Indigenous communities of the Americas across the ages.
The Argentine director Lisandro Alonso wrote the screenplay with Fabián Casas and Martín Caamaño and co-produced with France, Germany, Portugal and Mexico: 146 minutes that use the Western as a genre in order to leave it behind. It premiered in 2023 in the Cannes Première section in Cannes; it won the special jury prize in Lima. The film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2023 in the Hommage Lisandro Alonso, within the Berlinale World Cinema Fund section.
