THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

Julie (Renate Reinsve) is in her late twenties, lives in Oslo, and has already started over several times: medicine, then psychology, then photography, each time with the same conviction that this, now, is the right thing. She moves in with Aksel (Anders Danielsen Lie), a comic book artist fifteen years her senior who wants children and is steering her life onto a track she is not yet ready for. At a party she was not invited to, she meets Eivind (Herbert Nordrum), and the question of who she wants to be arises all over again. “The Worst Person in the World” by Joachim Trier, Norway 2021, follows Julie over four years, in twelve chapters with a prologue and an epilogue.

Trier and his co-writer Eskil Vogt bring their Oslo trilogy to a close with this film, borrowing the form of the romantic comedy in order to quietly subvert it: the film is as funny as it is painful, and its best-known image, a city that stands still for Julie, is an image of wanting. At Cannes 2021 the film screened in competition, and Renate Reinsve was named Best Actress; Norway submitted it for the Oscar race. “The Worst Person in the World” opened Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2021, in the Opening Night section.
