NIEMAND IST BEI DEN KÄLBERN

Christin (Saskia Rosendahl) is 24 and lives with her boyfriend Jan (Rick Okon) on his father’s dairy farm in rural Mecklenburg. The days consist of milking, feeding, waiting; in the evenings she sits at the edge of the village and looks at the wind turbines. Her own father drinks, and she looks after him because no one else will. Christin wants to leave, but without training or money she remains tied to the taciturn Jan and to the only life she knows. A technician from Hamburg who services the wind turbines seems to promise her a way out. “Niemand ist bei den Kälbern” by Sabrina Sarabi, Germany 2021, tells of the narrowness of a landscape that looks wide open on postcards.

The source is the novel of the same name by Alina Herbing. Sarabi, who had already portrayed a young woman under pressure in “Prélude”, directs without embellishment and without contempt for her characters; Saskia Rosendahl carries the film in almost every shot. It premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in 2021, in the Cineasti del presente section, where Rosendahl was named Best Actress. The film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2021 in the German Discovery section.
