ANATOMY OF TIME

Two glimpses into the life of one woman. In the 1960s, Maem is a young woman in rural Thailand whose path crosses that of an officer. Fifty years later, in Bangkok, she cares for a dying man – her husband, a disgraced general – and looks back on a life of loss, disappointment and betrayal. “Anatomy of Time” by Jakrawal Nilthamrong, a co-production between Thailand, France, the Netherlands and Singapore from 2021, layers both timelines over one another until the private fate reveals the country’s political history.

Nilthamrong drew on his own family history, on his mother’s devotion to his sick father, and turned it, as he himself puts it, into a meditation on suffering, being and time. The film is slow, visually striking, and refuses resolution. It premiered in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival in 2021; at Tokyo Filmex, “Anatomy of Time” won the main prize. The film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2021 in the Berlinale World Cinema Fund section.
