OSLO, 31. AUGUST
Synopsis
Anders is in his mid-thirties and has spent months in a rehabilitation clinic outside Oslo. He is allowed a day in the city: a job interview is coming up, and afterwards he wants to see his sister. He visits his old friend Thomas, who now has a family, walks through streets where he used to live, sits in cafés listening to other people’s conversations, and calls a number no one picks up. The longer the day lasts, the clearer it becomes that Anders has decided something. “Oslo, 31. August” by Joachim Trier, Norway 2011, follows him into the night.
The source is Pierre Drieu La Rochelle’s 1931 novel “Le feu follet”, which Louis Malle had filmed in 1963; Trier and his co-writer Eskil Vogt move it into the present. Anders Danielsen Lie plays the lead role; after “Auf Anfang” it is the second part of Trier’s Oslo trilogy. The premiere took place in 2011 in Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section. The film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2011.
