MORGEN

Nelu is in his early forties and works as a security guard in a supermarket in Salonta, a small Romanian town on the border with Hungary. Fishing at dawn, his shift, home to his wife in the evening – that is how the days pass. Then he meets a Turk who wants to cross the border into Germany without papers. The two share no common language, but Nelu takes the stranger home anyway and decides to help him. “Morgen” by Marian Crișan, Romania 2010, is the director’s feature debut; he also wrote the screenplay.

Crișan tells it as a quiet satire on prejudice and borders, with dry humour and without giving up the seriousness of the subject; the friendship between two men who do not understand each other is at its core. At the Locarno Festival in 2010 the film won the Special Jury Prize as well as the Ecumenical Jury Prize and the Youth Jury Prize. The film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2011.
