SMALL TOWN MURDER SONGS
Synopsis
Walter is the police chief of a small Mennonite community in Ontario. He has left his years of violence behind him, has found faith, and lives with a new partner, calm and restrained. Then the body of a young woman is found by the lake, and suspicion falls on the man Walter’s former lover Rita now lives with. The investigation leads him back to everything he has renounced. In “Small Town Murder Songs” by Ed Gass-Donnelly, Canada 2010, Peter Stormare plays the lead role; Jill Hennessy is Rita, Martha Plimpton Walter’s new partner.
Gass-Donnelly tells it sparely, as a gothic ballad of guilt and redemption; the music of the band Bruce Peninsula, whose album “Small Town Murder Scene” inspired the title, drives the film. The premiere took place in September 2010 at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2011.
