NINA'S TRAGEDIES

Nadav is fourteen and hopelessly in love – with his aunt Nina (Ayelet Zurer), who has just lost her husband. The film tells, from his point of view, what happens in a family in Tel Aviv when death intrudes: how Nina deals with her grief, how Nadav tries to understand her caught between closeness and infatuation, and how in doing so he grasps for the first time what love and loss mean. The Israeli Savi Gabizon shot and wrote “Nina’s Tragedies” in 2003.

Gabizon tells the story as an ensemble tragicomedy in which the adults are no less at a loss than the boy who observes them. In Israel the film won eleven Ophir awards, the Israeli film academy’s prizes, and was the first Israeli feature to be shown at the Sundance Film Festival. “Nina’s Tragedies” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2006.
