DUCK SEASON
Synopsis
A Sunday in a flat in the Tlatelolco district of Mexico City. Flama (Daniel Miranda) and Moko (Diego Cataño), both fourteen, have the place to themselves. The cola is poured to the brim, the pizza ordered, the clock set because the delivery service guarantees thirty minutes, and then the question is who gets to play whom in “Halo”. Then the power goes out. The neighbour Rita (Danny Perea) rings the bell because she needs the oven for her birthday cake, and the pizza delivery man Ulises (Enrique Arreola) insists on payment the two boys are unwilling to make. The four of them are stuck together. “Duck Season” is the feature debut of the Mexican Fernando Eimbcke, from 2004.
The film takes place almost entirely in one location and is shot in black and white; the boredom of an afternoon becomes a comedy about loneliness and what adult life has in store. Its international premiere took place in 2004 in the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes; in Mexico it won eleven Ariel awards, including for best film and best director. “Duck Season” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2006.
