FRENZY

Istanbul in a near, unspecified future: bomb attacks shake the nights, the police seal off whole districts. Kadir (Mehmet Özgür) is released early from prison after twenty years – on condition that he works as an informant for the security officer Hamza. Working as a rubbish collector in the poor districts, he searches the waste for traces of explosives and files reports. In doing so he finds his younger brother Ahmet (Berkay Ateş) again, who kills stray dogs for the city and avoids contact; his wife and children have left him, and the middle brother Ali has disappeared. The more Kadir observes, the more conspiracies he sees. “Frenzy” (“Abluka”, 2015) is by Emin Alper of Turkey.

Emin Alper’s second feature is a study in paranoia in which the line between nightmare and reality blurs: political polarisation, read as the story of two brothers ground down by it. In the Venice competition, “Frenzy” won the Special Jury Prize in 2015, and the best film award at the Adana festival. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2016.
