BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD

Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) is six years old and lives with her father Wink in the “Bathtub”, a settlement of corrugated iron and boats in the swamps of Louisiana, beyond the levees, where the state does not reach. When Wink falls ill, the order of the world comes apart for the child: a storm is brewing, the water is rising, the ice caps are melting in the south, and with the ice, primeval aurochs break free and head for the Bathtub. As her father grows weaker, Hushpuppy sets out to find her mother. “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is the first feature by Benh Zeitlin, USA 2012.

Zeitlin tells the catastrophe consistently from within a child’s imagination, with non-professional actors and a camera held at the six-year-old’s eye level. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and the Caméra d’Or at Cannes in 2012 and received four Oscar nominations, including best picture, best director and adapted screenplay; Quvenzhané Wallis was the youngest actress ever nominated for best actress. The film opened Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2012, in the Opening Night section.
