Sentimental Value, the latest film by Norwegian director Joachim Trier, will open the 20th AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS world cinema festival. The festival will take place in Berlin from November 28 to December 6, 2025.
From "Blissful cinema about cinema." (First Showing) to "The best film of the year." (Vogue) and "A moving masterpiece." (Indiewire): after its world premiere in Cannes in May 2025, Sentimental Value, the sixth feature film by Norwegian director Joachim Trier, has already received widespread acclaim. Now, the award-winning drama will celebrate its Berlin premiere as the opening film of the 20th edition of AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS on November 28, 2025, at Kino in der KulturBrauerei. Together with his longtime co-writer Eskil Vogt, Joachim Trier creates a tragicomic portrait of a father-daughter relationship, portrayed on screen with great intensity by an ensemble including Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning. Sentimental Value won the Grand Prix at Cannes 2025 and is Norway’s official submission for the 2026 Academy Award in the category Best International Feature Film. The co-production between Norway, France, Denmark, and Germany also includes Berlin-based Komplizen Film. Funding came from, among others, the German Federal Film Board (FFA), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, ARTE, and Eurimages. Joachim Trier’s works have previously been presented several times at AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS, including 2011 (Oslo, August 31st), 2015 (Louder Than Bombs), and 2021 (The Worst Person in the World).
AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS presents highlights of current world cinema from November 28 to December 6, 2025—films that were previously celebrated and awarded at leading festivals such as Cannes, Venice, and Locarno. Festival venues include Kino in der KulturBrauerei, delphi LUX, and Neues Off.
Synopsis: Nora and Agnes share a complex relationship with their father, who always put work before family. Now, after years of silence, Gustav suddenly appears at their doorstep—with a charming grin and the emotional baggage of half a lifetime. Old family dynamics immediately resurface. And little by little it becomes clear that father and daughters are more alike than they believed. Perhaps it isn’t too late for a new beginning? German theatrical release: December 4, 2025 (Plaion Pictures GmbH / Studiocanal GmbH).
Director: Norwegian director and screenwriter Joachim Trier studied at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, England, and at the European Film College in Ebeltoft, Denmark. His six feature films to date have won international recognition, including The Worst Person in the World, for which Renate Reinsve was awarded Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival and which was nominated for a BAFTA as well as two Academy Awards. Sentimental Value is his sixth collaboration with co-writer Eskil Vogt.
About the Festival: In a "best of" the year, the festival annually presents outstanding works of young world cinema. The films of this cinematic journey in 14 stations—along with additional specials—were previously celebrated and awarded at leading film festivals from Cannes, Venice, and Locarno to Sundance.
