Opening Night
THE SEED OF THE HOLY FIG
Mohammad Rasoulof
SYNOPSIS
Iman has just been promoted to investigating judge at the Revolutionary Court in Tehran when a huge protest movement takes hold in the country following the death of a young woman. Although the demonstrations are increasing and the state is taking increasingly harsh measures, Iman decides to side with the regime, thereby upsetting his family's balance. While the devout father struggles with the psychological stress of his new job, his daughters Rezvan and Sana are shocked and electrified by the events. His wife Najmeh, on the other hand, tries desperately to keep everyone together. Then Iman discovers that his service weapon has disappeared and he suspects his family... With THE SEED OF THE HOLY FIG TREE, Mohammad Rasoulof, winner of the Golden Bear for BUT THERE IS NO SUCH THING, delivers his masterpiece: an angry and blunt reckoning with the unjust regime in Iran, told as a brilliant, breathless political thriller and filled with authentic images of the protests in autumn 2022 that shook the country to its foundations. It is a film made under difficult circumstances, secretly shot in Iran, the impact of which is so great that Rasoulof was forced to leave his home country shortly before the world premiere in the Cannes competition. At the 77th Cannes Film Festival, THE SEED OF THE HOLY FIG TREE received minutes of standing ovations, was celebrated internationally by the press and was awarded the Special Jury Prize and four other prizes. The film, which was produced for the most part by Rasoulof’s Hamburg company Run Way Pictures, is Germany’s Oscar entry in the category “Best International Film”.
