KILL THE JOCKEY

Argentina | Luis Ortega

Jockey Remo Manfredini (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) was once celebrated for his successes. Now he is sitting drunk in a bar when he is woken up by some of his criminal boss's henchmen. This uproariously funny scene opens “Kill the Jockey”, which is not without reason reminiscent of the drowsy laconicism of Aki Kaurismäki. Director Luis Ortega takes us into the slightly crazy world of horse racing in today's Buenos Aires. Remo, an alcoholic and drug addict, causes a terrible accident with an expensive horse belonging to his client Sirena, in which he himself is injured. Sirena swears revenge and wants to eliminate Remo. The young man only gets help from his girlfriend Abril, who would like to make it as a jockey herself. But her unwanted pregnancy with Remo makes her reassess her relationship with him. “Kill the Jockey” is a wonderfully bizarre film that sees its characters stumble from one disaster to the next and develops its very own cinematic language in the process. Ortega plays with different concepts of sexuality and identity without sacrificing the playful tone of his film for clumsy theorizing. The result is a chaotically dreamy, clever puzzle about the limits of personal ambition and the longing for redemption. A fascinating cinematic experience that celebrated its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
